Car Accident Near Haines City Police Department

Anthony Thomas Giglitotti was driving a 1994 Toyota Camry when it left the roadway on U.S. Highway 27 near Officer Horner Memorial Way. Officer Horner Memorial Way was formerly known as Johnson Avenue and is shown on Google Maps as such. The accident happened as Giglitotti was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 27. Giglitotti hit a light pole and spun around ending up in the open field next to the police station. The Ledger reports that an autopsy will be performed to determine if there was a medical condition that may have been a cause of the accident. Alcohol or drugs are not presently suspected. The accident was reported to have occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Autopsy Will Reveal Medical Conditions But Not Driver Distraction

The photograph from Google Maps appears to show several poles and the field where Mr. Giglitotti’s vehicle came to a stop. In addition to a sudden medical emergency, this accident could also have been caused by a mechanical defect, driver distraction, or driver fatigue. Driver distraction and driver fatigue will not show up on “autopsy findings” as the medical examiner looks for pathological or physical causes of death in an accidental death investigation.

Distraction due to a cell phone is possible but may not be likely due to the driver’s age. The medical examiner should be able to make a determination as to whether the death was caused by the trauma of the accident. If the injuries are not such that a death likely resulted from trauma, then the cause may very well be a medical condition.

Regardless of the cause of death, Mr. Giglitotti’s automobile insurance company is required by section 627.736, Florida Statutes to pay a $5,000 death benefit.
